Fit-first design is not a common starting point in fashion. Most garments are developed on a sample size and graded outward from there. SACHA DRAKE takes a different approach, one that starts from the body the clothes are actually designed for, before a single pattern piece is drawn.
Every garment in the collection begins with Sacha herself draping fabric directly over her own body, a size 14 hourglass frame, before any pattern is created. That starting point changes what every dress becomes.

Why the Starting Point in Design Changes Everything
Conventional pattern making starts with a base block built for a sample size. The garment is fitted and refined on that body, then scaled across the size range through a process called grading.
Grading is efficient. Where it becomes less reliable is in how different bodies distribute weight at different sizes. A dress that fits beautifully through the bodice at one size may sit differently through the waist or hip at another, because the scaling process uses uniform increments rather than accounting for how real body shapes actually change.
Sacha Drake starts the pattern-making process at the size and body shape the brand is primarily designing for. That is the foundation the entire collection is built on.

Draping on a Real Body Before Anything Is Cut
Before anything is drafted, cut, or sent to a maker, Sacha drapes fabric on her own body and works out the design from there. The pattern comes from the drape, not the other way around.
The label launched in Brisbane in 2002 because Sacha, a size 14, could not find dresses that actually worked on her body. That founding problem became the design process, and two decades later, the starting point has not changed.
After the initial drape, each garment is fitted on both a size 8 and a size 14 model. The pattern is adjusted based on both before moving into production, so the proportions work across the size range rather than at just one point.

The Details That Make a Dress Actually Fit
Waist Definition
SACHA DRAKE designs are thoughtfully designed to create a flattering silhouette, with many styles featuring waist ties, wraps or self tie-belts that define the waist with ease. Adjustable details allow you to personalise the fit, creating shape where you want it for a comfortable, confident feel.

Hem Length
SACHA DRAKE offers a range of hem lengths to suit every height, with midi dresses providing a versatile option that can be styled for both cocktail and formal events. For more petite women, a midi length often falls closer to a maxi, offering the elegance of a full-length gown without the need for alterations.
Maxi dresses and pants are intentionally designed with a little extra length, as a hem can always be shortened, but never added. This allows for a more personalised fit across a range of heights.

Body Shapes
No two bodies are the same, which is why SACHA DRAKE offers styles designed to suit a range of shapes, including pear, apple, hourglass, column and pregnancy. Flexible fits, wrap styles, adjustable waistlines, varied hem lengths and non-belted silhouettes make it easy to find pieces that feel as good as they look.

Designed and Made in Australia
SACHA DRAKE partly manufactures in Australia, working with the same skilled local makers across many years. Patterns and production stay in close proximity, so adjustments are made quickly and carried through to the finished garment.
The knitwear collection is designed and produced entirely in-house in Brisbane. Each garment is machine knitted, with the in-house team overseeing every stage of production to ensure the quality, fit and finish meet exacting standards. Because the same team that designs also manages the production, the original fit and design are preserved from concept through to the finished piece.
The result is a brand with stockists across Australia and a customer base that returns season after season because the clothes consistently deliver.

What a Better Fit Feels Like to Wear
When a garment is patterned on a real body size, the woman buying it in other sizes is wearing a design developed with her proportions in mind from the beginning. The waist sits where it should. The fabric skims through the midsection rather than pulling. The hem falls at a flattering point.
Through a full day of wear, the wrap stays wrapped, the midi holds its shape, the knit does not distort. For women with back-to-back commitments and no time to manage their clothing, that matters more than it sounds.

Shop Dresses Designed Around Your Shape
SACHA DRAKE has spent over two decades doing what most fashion brands have not: designing from the body first. Every dress in the collection is patterned on a real size 14 hourglass frame, tested across multiple shapes before it goes into production, and made by skilled professionals.
Too many women settle for clothes that almost fit. At SACHA DRAKE, we've spent over 20 years proving that thoughtful design and exceptional fit can go hand in hand, creating pieces that look beautiful and feel even better to wear.

Dress Styling and Fit
For work, minimal styling lets the print or cut do the talking. Block heels, a structured bag and simple jewellery are all you need. For events, add strappy heels, a statement earring and a clutch to shift the mood entirely. SACHA DRAKE's online stylists are available via chat for personalised recommendations if you want a second opinion.
The wrap silhouette works across most body shapes because the adjustable tie allows you to manipulate the dress to your body. It is particularly flattering on Hourglass and Pear shapes as it defines the waist and skims the hips.
For a formal event, keep accessories elevated with heeled sandals, a clutch and statement jewellery. For a weekend or travel setting, flat sandals and a sun hat bring the formality down without the dress losing its impact. The SACHA DRAKE maxi is designed to transition between settings, so the same dress works across multiple occasions with a simple accessory swap.
The midi sits roughly at mid-calf and works across a broader range of occasions including workwear, cocktail events and weddings. The maxi runs to the ankle or floor and leans more toward formal occasions and warm-weather events. Both silhouettes are available in wrap and structured styles across the SACHA DRAKE range, and both are categorised by body shape to help you find the most flattering option.
Every SACHA DRAKE garment is categorised by one of five body shapes: Hourglass, Column, Pear, Apple and Maternity. The brand designs specifically to flatter each shape rather than applying a single block pattern across all sizes. Wrap and reverse-wrap styles in particular are engineered to define the waist, balance proportions and move well on the body rather than just fitting around it.
Wrap and reverse-wrap midi styles are the strongest options for a pear shape. The wrap tie allows you to define the waist while the skirt skims over the hips rather than clinging. A-line midi silhouettes also work well for the same reason.
