How to Dress for Winter Racing with Warmth and Sophistication

Winter racing in Brisbane is one of the best style opportunities the calendar offers. Cooler temperatures, polished racewear, and a strong fashion culture make it the perfect season to dress with intention.

The Brisbane Racing Club Ladbrokes Stradbroke Season returns from 2 May to 27 June across Eagle Farm Racecourse and Doomben Racecourse, bringing together world-class racing, standout style, and seven Saturdays worth dressing up for.

This season, SACHA DRAKE is honoured to be one of the sponsors supporting Fashion on the Field prizes throughout the carnival. With more than $26,000 in prizes available, the competition gives racegoers the opportunity to step things up, express their personal style, and embrace the polish and creativity that make winter racing fashion so memorable.

Slightly cooler temperatures mean your fabric choices finally have room to perform. Velvet, wool, ponte, tweed, and brocade all hold their structure in the cooler months and photograph more richly than their summer counterparts.

This guide will show you how to dress well for Brisbane Racing Club’s winter racing calendar, so you can arrive feeling warm, sophisticated, and race-day ready.

Members Reserve standards

According to the  BRC Official Website, for ladies on Saturdays and public holidays, the requirement is a neat dress in keeping with the dignity of the Members Reserve. No bare midriffs or playsuits.

What is not permitted

Shirts without a collar, polo shirts, ripped clothing, nightclub attire, exposed midriff, active wear, trade clothing, shorts of any kind, untailored pants, jeans or denim, singlets, and improper footwear including joggers, sport shoes, thongs, crocs, slippers, and casual slides are not allowed.

Always check the website for the most current dress code before race day as requirements are updated each season.

How to build your outfit

Fabric first

Brisbane winters are mild but cool, especially at the track in the mornings and evenings. Choose your fabric accordingly.

Jersey and ponte hold their shape through a full afternoon on your feet and do not crease by days end. Velvet and brocade sit at the formal end of the spectrum, photograph with depth, and hold warmth well. Wool blends and tweed work across the full Stradbroke calendar. Thick lace and faux fur trims add texture and warmth without adding bulk.

Leave chiffon and linen for warmer months. Both lose heat quickly.

Colour

Winter tones like navy, maroon, deep purple, copper, emerald green, and mustard all read strongly against winter light. Black and white works for both Derby and Stradbroke Day themes. Metallic accessories in gold, silver, or bronze add warmth to darker outfits without breaking the palette.

Layer with purpose

A blazer in a complementary tone works for daytime and covered venues. A long-line coat gives full coverage in all conditions. A cape over a wrap midi dress covers your arms and shoulders and adds the architectural quality.

Unusually cold? Do not skip the base layer

A thin merino base layer under your dress adds warmth without changing how your outfit looks. Pair it with opaque tights. Patterned or fishnet stockings are also a strong style choice. These additions separate the person who lasts the full day from the person who goes inside early.

Footwear and bags

Block heels give you height and keep you stable on uneven ground. Heeled ankle boots give you warmth. Match your footwear tone to your outfit. Dark boots with dark tights and a dark dress creates a long, unbroken line that reads as intentional. Before the race, remember to break your shoes in so you don’t hurt your feet.

For your bag, choose leather, structured fabric, or a hard-frame clutch. Straw and summery textures read out of season. A leather or velvet clutch suits the Stradbroke Season well.

Finishing touches

Winter makeup suits a darker, bolder lip. Reds, burgundy, and maroon tones complement the season. Pair with a soft eye rather than heavy liner.

For millinery, avoid straw in winter. Choose felt, wool, velvet, or leather instead. Berets are a strong current trend and work well with structured midi looks. Bejewelled headbands with veiling are a good option if you prefer a smaller headpiece over a full hat.

Gloves are an underused winter racing detail. Leather or suede gloves in a complementary or contrasting colour extend your look and add warmth.
